Moving from Sydney to Melbourne: A Practical Planning Guide

Moving from Sydney to Melbourne is a genuine interstate move. Transport for NSW describes the Hume Highway as stretching more than 800 kilometres between the two cities. Over that distance you and your belongings travel separately, loading and delivery may not happen on the same day, and once you arrive, Victoria has its own rules for your driver licence and car registration.

What makes moving from Sydney to Melbourne different?

A move to Melbourne changes three things.

You and the truck travel separately

You will not be following the truck down the Hume. You might fly and meet your belongings at the other end, or drive down at your own pace. Either way, plan each end before the doors close in Sydney.

Pick up and delivery can fall on different days

Ask every removalist which day they will load and which day they expect to deliver, and get both in writing. The days in between are the part of an interstate move that needs the most planning.

You become a Victorian resident

Unlike a move from Sydney to Newcastle, where you only update your address, Melbourne puts you under VicRoads. Your NSW licence has to be converted within a set time, and a car you bring is registered at a VicRoads appointment.

Is moving to Melbourne from Sydney worth it?

That depends on your work, your budget and the people around you, so we will not rank one city over the other. What we can offer is a few honest questions and some neutral context.

Questions to ask before you commit

Is there a confirmed job, or a realistic plan for work, in Melbourne?
Which suburbs can you afford, and how would you get to work from them?
Do you have children starting or changing school, and which school would they go to?
How often will you travel back to Sydney for family, friends or work?

The honest pros and cons are personal. A new job or family nearby can make the move worthwhile, while distance from your Sydney network and the admin of changing states are the real downsides. Spend a few days in the suburbs you are considering before you sign anything.

What the population figures say

The two cities are close in size. The Australian Bureau of Statistics release Capital city growth slows, published in March 2026, puts Greater Sydney at 5,638,800 people and Greater Melbourne at 5,435,600 at 30 June 2025. Over the 2024 to 2025 financial year, Melbourne grew by 105,000 people and Sydney by 75,200. None of that tells you which city suits you.

How is a Sydney to Melbourne move quoted?

We do not publish figures, because a number without your details is a guess. Here is what moves the price, so you can compare quotes and ask for a free moving quote with the right details ready.

How much you are moving, and the truck it needs

Volume decides the truck. Our fleet runs in seven sizes, from a 4 to 5 tonne truck that holds 20 to 25 cubic metres and suits an inner city apartment, up to a 65 to 70 cubic metre truck for a six bedroom home. We size the truck to the job first, so the move is done in a single trip.

A sole use truck

For interstate moves we offer a sole use truck, which means the truck carries your household and nothing else. Ask every removalist whether their quote is for a truck dedicated to your move. Packing and storage can both be added to the same booking, as our interstate removals page explains.

Access at both ends

Stairs, lifts, a long carry and parking all affect how long loading and unloading take, and here you have two sets to describe. On a fixed price job, extra cost can apply for large staircases, heavy or specialty items and access problems such as a long carry or no parking, and we raise those before moving day rather than on it.

Packing

How much packing you hand over changes the job. Our packing and unpacking team can take one room, just the breakables, or the whole house. On the day, the crew brings moving boxes, shrink wrap and other packaging materials, and shrink wrapping of mattresses is included free when you book. Our packing services in Sydney guide has more.

Distance and travel time

The truck has to reach Melbourne and then come back. On regional and longer moves, travel time can also apply to the return journey, so ask each removalist how their quote treats it. If your belongings need to wait between the two homes, storage becomes part of the quote too.

Planning the gap between pick up and delivery

Most of the stress on an interstate move sits in the days between the truck leaving Sydney and arriving in Melbourne.

Line up the dates at both ends

If you rent in Sydney, the NSW Government’s page on minimum notice periods for ending a residential tenancy sets 21 days for a tenant ending a periodic tenancy and 14 days for a tenant leaving at the end of a fixed term. More notice leaves room to match your last Sydney day to your first Melbourne one.

Decide how you will get there

Book your own travel around the delivery date, not the loading date. If you fly, make sure someone with the keys will be at the Melbourne address when the truck is due, and give the crew that person’s name and number.

What travels with you, not on the truck

We do not carry hazardous materials: gas bottles, flammable liquids, batteries, jerry cans, or anything holding fuel. Pack a bag for the days without your furniture: medication, documents, chargers, the keys for the new place, a few changes of clothes, and food and bedding for pets.

When the dates do not line up

If you have to be out of Sydney before the Melbourne place is ready, ask about storage as part of the same booking. Ours is modular: the box is delivered to your address, our crew packs it, it is held in a secure facility with constant surveillance and restricted access, then it is delivered back and unpacked at the other end. Convert your NSW licence to a Victorian one

VicRoads’ page on driving with an interstate licence is direct: “If you have an interstate licence, you’ll need to convert to a Victorian licence within six months of residing in Victoria.” It has an online tool that works out the date you need to convert by and the type of Victorian licence you will get.

Its guide to how you convert an interstate licence says it is done by appointment at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, with your NSW licence and proof that you live in Victoria.

Register your NSW car in Victoria

VicRoads’ page on how to register a vehicle from another state covers a car you have brought with you that is now garaged in Victoria. You must register it in person, and you need to book an appointment, because it cannot be done online. You hand in your NSW plates and leave with Victorian ones.

For a car coming from NSW, you do not need a roadworthy certificate if the registration is current, or expired less than three months before your appointment, and you are registering it in the same name. The page does not state a deadline for re-registering, so ask VicRoads when you book your licence appointment.

Update your electoral enrolment

The Australian Electoral Commission’s update my details page says that when you move house, you must update your enrolment details, and that you are eligible to enrol at your new address once you have lived there for at least one month. The update can be done online.

Redirect your mail

Australia Post’s mail redirection service sends your letters and parcels on to your new address for up to 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and you must prove your identity when you apply, so set it up before you leave Sydney.

How to choose a removalist for a move to Melbourne

There is no single best removalist for this route, whatever a ranking list says. A few quick checks tell you more.

Get the quote and the terms in writing

The NSW Government’s advice on choosing a removalist is clear: “Always ask for a written quote before hiring a removalist company.” It also says the contract should cover the full service, a household inventory, the pick up and delivery addresses, dates and times, how payment is made, and any extra costs for storage if the move is delayed.

Check AFRA accreditation yourself

The same page notes that you can check whether a removalist is accredited on the AFRA website. Rather than trusting a logo, search the business on AFRA’s free Find an AFRA Removalist directory by suburb or postcode. We are AFRA accredited and fully insured, and we are happy to be checked the same way.

Ask how your belongings are insured

The NSW Government says removalists are not required by law to provide insurance for your property during a move, and recommends getting your own. Our insurance options are restricted cover, for events such as fire, flood, collision and vehicle overturning, and full cover, which adds loss or damage during packing, loading and unloading plus accidental damage. Additional insurance is not compulsory.

Questions worth asking every removalist

Is the quote for a sole use truck carrying my household alone?
What size truck are you allowing, and will everything fit in one trip?
Which day will you load in Sydney, and which day do you expect to deliver in Melbourne?
How is travel time treated, including the return journey?
What will you not carry?

Moving from Sydney to Melbourne: a timeline checklist

Adjust the order to suit your move.

As soon as you have a rough date, get written quotes, check each removalist on AFRA’s directory, and ask about the truck, travel time and storage.
Once your Melbourne start date is confirmed, give notice on your Sydney lease or confirm settlement, keeping the NSW minimum notice periods in mind.
Book your removalist in writing with the loading and delivery dates stated, choose a weekday if you can, and arrange storage now if the dates do not line up.
Book your own flights, or plan the drive, around the delivery date.
Three to four weeks out, declutter room by room so you are not paying to move things you will not use in Melbourne.
Two weeks out, start packing the rooms you use least and label every box by room.
One week out, set up mail redirection, book disconnection and connection dates with your providers, and confirm parking and lift bookings at both addresses.

Moving from Sydney to Brisbane is a genuine interstate move. The Pacific Highway, which the NSW Government says “connects Sydney and Brisbane”, runs up the coast between the two cities, and the NRMA’s own Sydney to Brisbane road trip itinerary takes three days. That distance changes how the move works: you and your belongings usually travel separately, pick up and delivery are planned as two separate events, and the paperwork changes state when you do.

What makes a Sydney to Brisbane move different?

Two things set this move apart from a move across Sydney, or a shorter trip such as moving to Canberra from Sydney or moving from Sydney to Newcastle.

You and the truck travel separately

On a move to Brisbane, the crew loads in Sydney, the truck makes the long run north, and you make your own way by car or plane. Your plans need to cover two journeys, not one.

Pick up and delivery are planned separately

Because of the distance, loading in Sydney and unloading in Brisbane are planned as two separate events, each with its own date and time. The NSW Government’s advice on choosing a removalist says the contract should set out the pick up and delivery addresses, dates and times. Plan your keys, leases and travel around both.

How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Brisbane?

Planning the gap between pick up and delivery

A move to Brisbane has several parts: loading in Sydney, the truck’s run north, your own trip, any time in storage, and unloading in Brisbane.

Loading in Sydney

Tell your removalist about access at your Sydney address before the day: stairs, whether there is a lift, where a truck can park, and how far it is to the door. A unit in Bondi or Manly, a terrace in Newtown, and a family home in Baulkham Hills, Mosman or Bankstown all load differently. In a unit block, check with the building manager or strata about moving hours and lift bookings.

Packing for a long trip

Your belongings spend longer on the road than on any move across Sydney, so fill each carton firmly, keep heavy items in smaller boxes, and label every carton by room. When we pack, our removalists place each labelled box in its matching room at the new address.

What cannot go on the truck

We do not carry gas bottles, flammable liquids, batteries, jerry cans or anything holding fuel. Use up or give away what you can, and drain the mower well ahead.

Your own trip north

If you drive, plan it as a trip in its own right. The NRMA lists the first leg of its coastal itinerary, Sydney to Coffs Harbour, at just over six hours of driving. Check road conditions before you set off.

When your Sydney and Brisbane dates do not line up

Lease end and settlement dates do not always line up across two states. If you have to be out of your Sydney home before the Brisbane one is ready, ask about storage as part of the same booking. Ours is modular: we deliver a module to your address, our crew packs it, and it is held in a secure facility with constant surveillance and restricted access. Modules start at 10 cubic metres, and larger loads are handled in the warehouse.

If the Brisbane keys come late, storage can hold your belongings until the new home is ready.

Ask any removalist how the storage and delivery legs would be scheduled, and check that the contract covers storage costs if the move is delayed.

Unloading in Brisbane

Be at the Brisbane address before the truck, with keys in hand and access sorted. With cartons labelled by room, the crew can place each one where it belongs while you direct the furniture.

What to do after you arrive in Brisbane

This is the part a move within New South Wales never asks of you. Two of these tasks come with deadlines.

Transfer your NSW licence to Queensland

The Queensland Government’s page on transferring to a Queensland licence says that if you have moved to Queensland, you will need to apply for a Queensland driver licence once you have been living there for three months. Its registration page puts it plainly: transfer to a Queensland licence “within 3 months”.

You apply at a transport and motoring customer service centre for the same class of licence you hold now. Bring your NSW licence, which you hand in, and original evidence of identity documents, including proof that you live in Queensland. If your NSW licence is current, the unexpired period carries over to your Queensland licence.

Register your car in Queensland within 14 days

If you move to Queensland with a NSW registered car that will be garaged at a Queensland address, you must register it in Queensland. The Queensland Government’s page on moving a vehicle to Queensland is direct: “You have 14 days to register your vehicle in Queensland and may be fined if you don’t.”

According to its page on how to register your vehicle, you will need a current Queensland safety certificate, evidence of identity and evidence of the car’s garage address, and the new registration must be done in person at a transport and motoring service centre. To get a refund on the rest of your NSW registration, you hand in your NSW number plates and contact the NSW authority to cancel it. Because 14 days goes quickly, book the safety certificate inspection for your first days in Brisbane.

Update the electoral roll and redirect your mail

Electoral roll. The Australian Electoral Commission’s update my details page says you are eligible to enrol at your new address once you have lived there for at least one month, and that when you move house you must update your enrolment details. The update can be done online.
Mail. Australia Post’s mail redirection service sends your letters and parcels on to your new address for up to one, three, six or twelve months, and you must prove your identity to apply. Set it up before you leave Sydney.
Everyone else. Update your address with your bank, insurers, employer and other accounts.

If you are renting in Brisbane

Queensland has its own tenancy paperwork. According to the Residential Tenancies Authority’s page on the entry condition report, a tenant must return the signed report within 7 days of moving in or being given it, whichever is later. If you do not return it, you are taken to agree with the owner’s description of the property. Do the walk through before the boxes arrive, and take photos.

How to choose a removalist for a Sydney to Brisbane move

The checks are the same as for any move, with extra weight on insurance, the truck arrangement and the delivery date.

Get a written quote and check AFRA yourself

The NSW Government’s advice on choosing a removalist is direct: “Always ask for a written quote before hiring a removalist company.” It also suggests reading the contract for a household inventory, the pick up and delivery addresses, dates and times, payment terms, and any storage costs if the move is delayed.

A removalist with a real address and a written quote is easier to hold to its word.

Ask how your belongings are insured

Newcastle sits about 160 kilometres north of Sydney, roughly a two hour drive according to the City of Newcastle’s Visit Newcastle guide. That distance shapes almost every decision when you are moving from Sydney to Newcastle: how the day is planned, how the move is quoted, and what happens if your keys do not line up. Because you stay in New South Wales, the paperwork is lighter than an interstate move. You update your address rather than transfer a licence.

City of Newcastle puts the drive at about two hours. Destination NSW’s VisitNSW page on Newcastle says two and a half hours. Both are fair, because the real figure depends on where in Sydney you start, where in the Hunter you finish, and the traffic on the day. Plan around the longer estimate and you are less likely to have a crew waiting at a locked door.

Newcastle or the wider Hunter?

The NSW Government’s Hunter Regional Plan 2041 describes a region of around 860,000 people “with Greater Newcastle at its heart”. A move to Newcastle can just as easily end in Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock or Port Stephens. Give your removalist the exact suburb, not just “Newcastle”, because it changes the drive.

How is a Sydney to Newcastle move quoted?

Packing

Packing yourself, packing some rooms, or having it done for you changes the job. Our packing and unpacking team can take one room, just the breakables, or the whole house. On the day, the crew brings moving boxes, shrink wrap and other packaging materials, and shrink wrapping of mattresses is included free when you book. Travel time, including the return journey

For moves within Sydney, a call out covers travel time based on distance from our depot. On regional or longer moves, travel time can also apply to the return journey, because the crew and truck still have to drive back to Sydney once your last box is in. Ask every removalist whether their quote includes travel time, including the trip back.

Fixed price or hourly

How do you plan a move day across a two hour drive?

A move to Newcastle has three parts: loading in Sydney, the drive, and unloading at the other end. Most problems on the day come from the gaps between them.

Be at the Newcastle end before the truck

Someone with the keys needs to be at the new address when the truck arrives. Leave as soon as the truck is loaded and the old place is checked, or send one person ahead, and give the crew the name and number of whoever will meet them.

Line up the keys at both ends

If you rent in Sydney, the NSW Government’s page on minimum notice periods for ending a residential tenancy sets 21 days for a tenant ending a periodic tenancy and 14 days for a tenant leaving at the end of a fixed term. Those are minimums, and more notice gives you more room to pick a date that suits both ends.

When the dates do not line up

If you have to be out of Sydney before the Newcastle place is ready, storage bridges the gap. A weekday gives you more choice

Weekdays typically offer better availability than weekends and peak dates, and can be more cost effective as well. A weekday move also falls inside our office hours, Monday to Thursday from 7:00 to 17:30 and Friday from 7:00 to 17:00, if you need to call us on the day.

What travels with you, not on the truck

We do not carry hazardous materials: gas bottles, flammable liquids, batteries, jerry cans, or anything holding fuel. Pack a priority box too. Ours is brightly coloured so the things you need first, such as chargers, medication and a change of clothes, are easy to find on the first night.

Who do you need to tell when you move to Newcastle?

Because you are staying in NSW, this is a list of address updates rather than transfers.

Transport for NSW, for your driver licence and vehicle registration. You must give your new address within 14 days of moving. Service NSW’s guide to moving house lets you add your licence and registrations to a MyServiceNSW Account and change the address in one go, and your CTP insurance details update automatically with your registration.
The Australian Electoral Commission. Once you have lived at the new address for at least a month, you can update your enrolment details online, using your licence, passport or Medicare details to confirm who you are.
Australia Post. Mail redirection runs for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and you must prove your identity when you apply, so set it up before you go.
Other NSW records on the Service NSW guide, such as your Opal card address, a Working with Children Check, and your dog or cat’s registration.
Your energy, water and internet providers, with a disconnection date in Sydney and a connection date in Newcastle.
Your bank, insurers, employer, Medicare, your GP and dentist, and any school or childcare provider.
Your new council. Look up your bin collection day on the council website, for example the City of Newcastle’s collection services page, since many Hunter suburbs sit in other council areas.

How do you choose a removalist for a Sydney to Newcastle move?

There is no single best removalist for this route, whatever a ranking list says. The useful question is whether a removalist passes a few checks that take minutes.

Get the quote and the terms in writing

The NSW Government’s choosing a removalist page is direct: “Always ask for a written quote before hiring a removalist company.” It also says to read the contract and check that it covers the full service, an inventory of your goods, pickup and delivery details, payment terms, and storage costs if the move is delayed.

Check accreditation yourself

The same page notes that “You can check whether a removalist is accredited on the AFRA website.” An AFRA logo on a truck is a claim, so search the business on AFRA’s free Find an AFRA Removalist directory by suburb or postcode. We are AFRA accredited and fully insured, and we are happy to be checked the same way.

Ask about insurance

The NSW Government recommends getting your own insurance for a move, and notes that removalists are not legally required to insure your belongings. Our removals insurance runs from restricted cover for events such as fire, flood and collision, to full cover that adds loss or damage during packing, loading and unloading, plus separate cover while goods are in storage. It is not compulsory.

A Sydney to Newcastle moving timeline

Start as early as your dates allow, and adjust the order to suit your move.

As soon as you have a rough date, get two or three written quotes, check each removalist on AFRA’s directory, and ask about travel time and storage.

Tell your removalist about access at your Sydney address before the day: stairs, whether there is a lift, where a truck can park, and how far it is to the door. A unit in Chatswood or Randwick, a terrace in Marrickville and a family home in Castle Hill, Liverpool or Cronulla all load differently. In a unit block, check with the building manager or strata about moving hours and lift bookings.

Packing for the trip

Start with the rooms you use least, and label every carton by room. What cannot go on the truck

We do not carry gas bottles, flammable liquids, batteries, jerry cans or anything holding fuel. Use up or give away what you can before the day, drain the mower well ahead, and ask any removalist what they will not take.

The drive to Canberra

With about three hours of driving between the two homes, you will usually travel separately from the truck. Agree a meeting time at the Canberra address with your crew, leave margin for a stop and for Sydney traffic, and check road conditions before you set off.

Keep a bag in the car with anything you cannot be without that night: medication, documents, chargers, the keys for the new place, a change of clothes, and food and bedding for pets.

Unloading in Canberra

Be at the Canberra end before the truck, with keys in hand and access sorted. If the new place is an apartment, book the lift and loading area with the building in advance. With cartons labelled by room, the crew can place each one where it belongs while you direct the furniture.

When your Sydney and Canberra dates do not line up

If you have to be out of your Sydney home before the Canberra one is ready, ask about storage as part of the same booking. What to do after you arrive in Canberra

This is the part a move across Sydney never asks of you. The ACT Government’s guide for people who are new to Canberra sets out the main tasks, and a few of them come with time limits.

Swap your NSW licence for an ACT licence

If you hold a full interstate licence and intend to drive in the ACT, you need to get an ACT driver licence within three months of moving, according to Access Canberra’s page for drivers with interstate licences. You will need to visit an Access Canberra Service Centre with proof of identity, proof that you live in the ACT, and your current interstate licence.

Register your car in the ACT

If you bring a NSW registered car and it will now be garaged in the ACT, it needs ACT registration. Access Canberra’s page on vehicles registered interstate says you will need one or more vehicle inspections first, along with establishment fees and possibly motor vehicle duty. Its vehicle registration and transfer page says registering is done in person at a Service Centre.

Do not leave it sitting on the list. Access Canberra is clear that “if your vehicle is unregistered, it is also uninsured.” We could not find a single deadline for this on its current pages, so ask when you book your licence appointment.

Update Access Canberra, Medicare and the electoral roll

If you have moved to Canberra from interstate, the ACT Government says you have three months to update your details with Access Canberra. Its checklist then suggests updating your Medicare details through myGov once you have your ACT licence.

For voting, the Australian Electoral Commission’s update my details page says you are eligible to enrol at your new address once you have lived there for at least one month, and that when you move house you must update your enrolment details. The update can be done online.

Mail, schools, pets and getting around

Mail. Australia Post’s mail redirection service sends your letters and parcels on to your new address for up to one, three, six or twelve months, and you must prove your identity to apply.
Schools. The ACT Government says every child from kindergarten to year 12 is guaranteed a place at their local public school.
Pets. Dogs and cats must be registered in the ACT if they are over eight weeks old and have been in the ACT for 28 days or more.
Getting around. Canberra’s buses and light rail use MyWay+, and you can pay with a bank card, a phone or a MyWay+ card.

Ask how your belongings are insured

The NSW Government page recommends arranging insurance for your move, and notes that most removalists only insure their vehicles. Ask every company what cover applies to your belongings on the road. Our insurance options are restricted cover, for events such as fire, flood, collision and vehicle overturning, and full cover, which adds loss or damage during packing, loading and unloading plus accidental damage. Cover can be on a market value or a replacement basis, and additional insurance is not compulsory.

Have this ready before you call

Have these answers ready and the call gets much shorter.

Your inventory, room by room, with the large pieces listed separately: fridge, washing machine, wardrobes, sofas, and anything in the garage or shed.
Access at both addresses: stairs, whether there is a lift, where a truck can park, and how far it is from the truck to the door.
Building rules. In a unit block, check with the building manager or strata about moving hours or a lift booking.

How do you avoid a dodgy removalist when you are rushing?

Urgency is when people skip the checks, and the two that matter most take minutes. The NSW Government’s choosing a removalist guidance says to always get a written quote and notes that “You can check whether a removalist is accredited on the AFRA website.” AFRA, the Australian Furniture Removers Association, describes itself as the peak industry body, with more than 250 members operating across Australia.

Check the AFRA claim against AFRA’s own directory

An AFRA logo on a website or a truck is a claim, not proof. AFRA’s free Find an AFRA Removalist search lets you enter a suburb or postcode and see current members by location and service type. Spend thirty seconds there before you pay anything. If a business says it is a member and does not appear, ask why, since it may trade under a different name.

Membership means something specific. According to AFRA’s page on why you should choose an AFRA member, applicant members “are rigorously screened, must meet high standards and are regularly audited to ensure compliance.” All members carry public liability insurance, most can sell additional goods in transit insurance, and AFRA offers a no cost dispute resolution process if something goes wrong. None of that is guaranteed with an operator you found ten minutes ago and cannot trace.

Get it in writing, even when you are in a hurry

A number over the phone is not a quote. Ask for it in writing and read the booking terms before you agree. The NSW Government page suggests reading the contract for the move details, inventory, dates, and payment and storage terms, which are exactly the details that go unchecked in a rush.

Warning signs worth walking away from

We looked for an official government list of removalist red flags and could not find one, so treat the list below as practical advice rather than a regulator’s checklist. Each point follows from what the NSW Government and AFRA do say: get it in writing, check accreditation independently, and know who you are dealing with.

Your consumer rights do not shrink because you booked in a hurry. The ACCC’s guidance on consumer rights and guarantees says service providers “must carry out all services using an acceptable level of care and skill,” and that services must be supplied within a reasonable time if there is no agreed time frame. Nothing in those guarantees depends on how far ahead you booked.

Raise it with the business first

If a guarantee is not met, the ACCC lists remedies that can include repair, replacement, a refund, cancellation, or compensation for damages or loss. The first step is to contact the business directly. Keep your written quote, booking confirmation and photos of any damage, because a paper trail makes any dispute easier to resolve.

Most of the work in a house move happens before the truck arrives. Every plate, glass, book and jacket has to be wrapped, boxed, labelled and carried. The Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA) says in its packing and unpacking guidance that its members are trained in correct packing methods “to minimise the risk of breakage”. That is the real case for a packing service in Sydney: technique, not just an extra pair of hands. It is also why anyone considering professional packers in Sydney, or an unpacking service in Sydney, is really asking one question. Is it worth paying someone else to do it?

This guide sets out what professional packing and unpacking actually includes, when it is worth paying for, how packing affects your removal insurance, and how to pack well if you take on some of it yourself. What does a packing service in Sydney actually include?

AFRA’s advice is to ask your removalist about the features of its packing service, and “whether packing materials are included in the price of the removal”, before you compare quotes.

How the job is scoped

Packing does not have to be all or nothing. Our dedicated packing team can take the whole house, one room, or the breakables only, as part of your move. A partial service lets you keep the easy things for yourself, such as linen, books and shoes, and hand over the kitchen and anything made of glass.

The materials that come with it

Materials matter as much as technique. Our packing team uses packing paper and bubble wrap for glassware, dinner settings and valuables, and port a robes for hanging clothes, which are rehung in the wardrobe at the other end. On moving day the crew also brings moving boxes, shrink wrap and other packaging materials, so a missing carton does not hold up the job.

Boxes are labelled by room as they are packed, and the removalists place each one in its matching room at the new address. It sounds like a small thing until you have stood in a lounge room full of unmarked cartons at the end of a long day.

What unpacking covers

Unpacking is easy to overlook when you book, and AFRA suggests raising it early: “Your removalist may also provide an unpacking service, so be sure and ask prior to packing your items.” Our unpacking service includes wiping down cupboard shelves before anything goes in, setting up bathrooms with toiletries and towels, then flattening the empty boxes and arranging their collection.

Is a professional packing service worth it, or should you pack yourself?

It depends on what you are packing, how much time you have, and how much lifting your body can take. SafeWork NSW says that hazardous manual tasks “are one of the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in NSW”, and a weekend of filling, taping and stacking cartons involves the kind of repeated lifting and carrying that guidance describes.

When packing yourself makes sense

Doing it yourself is a reasonable choice for a smaller home with few breakables, when you have several free days before the move and nobody in the house has a back or shoulder problem. It is also a good way to sort as you go, because nobody else can decide what gets donated, sold or thrown out. If that sounds like your move, buy sturdy cartons, pack a little each evening, and save professional help for the kitchen.

When professional packers are worth paying for

The strongest reason is often physical rather than financial. SafeWork NSW defines a manual task as any task that requires a person to “lift, lower, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move, hold, or restrain any person, animal, or thing”. Its list of risk factors includes “repetitive or sustained force”, “high or sudden force” and “sustained or awkward posture”. That is workplace guidance, but it reads a lot like packing a house: bending over cartons, lifting full ones, and doing it over and over.

The second reason is breakage. AFRA says its members are trained in correct packing methods to minimise the risk of breakage. The difference is in the detail: how each plate is wrapped, how the gaps in a carton are filled with paper, and how heavy items are kept to small boxes. If your kitchen holds good crockery, crystal or glass, that is where a trained packer earns their place.

The third reason is time, and here we will not give you a number. We have not found an independent source that measures how many hours professional packing saves, and every home is different. The honest version is simpler: packing a full house yourself tends to spread across evenings and weekends, while a dedicated team working through the rooms together takes the whole job off your list.

The middle option: breakables or one room

If full packing feels like more than you need, a partial service covers the riskiest part and leaves the rest to you. Handing over the breakables only, or just the kitchen, puts our packing team on the items most likely to break, while you pack the clothes, books and linen that rarely come to harm in a carton.

How does packing affect your removal insurance?

Who packs a box can matter to how it is covered. The NSW Government’s guidance on choosing a removalist explains that “transit cover insures your goods while they are being packed and moved by removalists and this includes any storage”. So before you choose a level of cover, ask exactly how boxes you pack yourself will be treated.

How our cover options treat packing

We are fully insured, and additional cover on your own goods comes at two levels. Restricted cover deals with major events: fire, explosion, lightning, flood, collision and the vehicle overturning. Full cover adds loss or damage during packing, loading and unloading, plus accidental damage, which is why the packing question and the insurance question are worth asking together. Storage cover is separate again, for goods held at the facility.

Cover can be taken on a market value basis, which accounts for age, condition and wear, or on a replacement basis up to the value you declare on the insurance declaration form. Your rights when a removalist packs for you

Alongside any insurance, Australian Consumer Law sets a baseline for the service itself. The ACCC states that service providers “must carry out all services using an acceptable level of care and skill” and “must also take reasonable steps to avoid causing loss or damage when providing the service”. That applies to a packing service in Sydney just as it applies to the move itself.

How to pack well if you do some of it yourself

Good packing comes down to the right box, enough wrapping, and a label on everything. AFRA’s guidance also flags a limit worth knowing early: household appliances such as washing machines, fridges and computers “often need specialist attention”, and preparing them is not the removalist’s responsibility.

Start with the rooms you use least, and leave the kitchen and bathroom until last.
Keep heavy and fragile things in small boxes. Our crystal carton is deliberately small, at 40 litres, so the packed weight stays easy to carry.
Wrap each glass and plate separately in packing paper or bubble wrap, then fill the gaps in the carton with paper so nothing shifts.
Hang clothes in a port a robe, which has its own hang rail so clothes go straight from cupboard to box.
Use a picture carton for pictures, mirrors and glass table tops, and a TV box with its insert blocks for a flat screen.
Put the things you will need first in a priority box, which is brightly coloured so you can find it straight away.
Label every box with the room it belongs in, so the crew can carry it straight to that room.

What should you ask before you book professional packers?

Ask how your most important items will be packed and handled, and get the answers in writing. In a 2021 consumer warning, Consumer Affairs Victoria told people to “ask questions about how items that you’re particularly worried about, or that are especially important, will be transported”. A first floor terrace in the inner west, a narrow staircase, a tight turn at the top and a wardrobe that has to go up it. That is where a Sydney move stops matching the map, and three flights of stairs add hours to a job that looked small.

North shore driveways are often steep, curved or too tight for a large truck, so the crew parks on the street and carries up. Strata usually wants the service lift booked and padded inside a set window, and missing it means waiting.

3. Parking and the street itself

The only legal spot can be around the corner and past a set of steps, which costs more time than the stairs inside the flat. Inner west streets are often one way and parked out on both sides.
