Moving to Canberra from Sydney: A Practical Planning Guide

Canberra is a short drive away, but the move still crosses a border.

The drive from Sydney to Canberra takes “about three hours, give or take, on the Hume,” according to the Australian National University’s guide to travelling to Canberra. That short trip is why moving to Canberra from Sydney is easy to underestimate. It feels like a long local move, but it takes you into the Australian Capital Territory, which has its own rules for driver licences, car registration and the paperwork that follows you.

This guide covers whether the move is worth it, what shapes the cost, how to plan the day, the ACT admin to sort out once you arrive, how to choose a removalist, and a timeline checklist.

We have worked as Sydney removalists for more than 20 years, and moves to Canberra are part of our interstate work. If you already want a price, start with our Sydney to Canberra removalists page.

Is moving to Canberra from Sydney worth it?

Only you can answer that. We move belongings, and we do not know your job offer, your budget or your family. What we can do is help you work through the practical questions before you book a truck rather than after it.

Sydney or Canberra: which is better to live in?

There is no single answer, because it depends on what you want from an ordinary week. A few honest questions help more than any ranking.

  • Where will you work, and how will you get there from the suburbs you can afford?
  • Do you have children starting or changing school, and which school would they go to?
  • How often will you travel back to Sydney for family, friends or work?

If you can, spend a weekend in the suburbs you are considering before you sign a lease or a contract. Our Canberra service area page lists every Canberra suburb we cover, from Belconnen and Gungahlin to Tuggeranong and Woden, a handy list when you are narrowing down where to look.

What moving from Sydney to Canberra involves

On the removal side, moving from Sydney to Canberra is closer to a big local move than a long haul run. The distance is short, so most of the planning goes into the two ends of the trip rather than the road between them.

For an interstate move like this we offer a sole use truck, which means the truck carries your household and nothing else. Packing and storage can both be added to the same booking.

How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Canberra?

We will not put a number in a blog post, because any figure given without your inventory and addresses would be a guess. Instead, here is what moves the price, so you can compare quotes properly and ask for a free moving quote with the right details ready.

What changes the price of the move

  • Volume. How much you are moving decides the truck. Our fleet runs from a 4 to 5 tonne truck holding 20 to 25 cubic metres, suited to an inner city apartment, up to a 65 to 70 cubic metre truck for a six bedroom home.
  • Access at both ends. Stairs, lifts, a long carry from the truck to the door, or no parking all add time. On a fixed price job we raise these before moving day rather than on it.
  • Packing. Having our packing team do one room, the breakables or the whole house becomes part of the quote, but it shortens the day.
  • The truck arrangement. Ask whether a quote is for a sole use truck carrying your household alone. It is the option we offer for interstate moves.
  • Travel. The truck has to reach Canberra and come back. On regional and longer moves, travel time can also apply to the return journey, so ask how each quote treats it.

Once we know your inventory, access and dates, we can quote a fixed price over the phone on 1300 883 117 or after a quick on site or virtual survey. Our guide to removalist costs in Sydney goes further into how a move is priced.

Planning a moving day with three hours of road in the middle

The move has three parts: loading in Sydney, the drive, and unloading in Canberra.

Loading in Sydney

Tell your removalist about access at your Sydney address before the day: stairs, whether there is a lift, where a truck can park, and how far it is to the door. A unit in Chatswood or Randwick, a terrace in Marrickville and a family home in Castle Hill, Liverpool or Cronulla all load differently. In a unit block, check with the building manager or strata about moving hours and lift bookings.

We size the truck to the job first, so the whole household goes in a single trip rather than repeat runs. Our removalists Sydney page covers the rest of our Sydney services.

Packing for the trip

Start with the rooms you use least, and label every carton by room. When we pack, boxes are labelled by room and our removalists place each one in its matching room at the new address, which saves searching in the first week. Our moving boxes range includes a brightly coloured priority box for the things you need first.

If packing a whole house around work is not realistic, our packing and unpacking team can take one room, just the breakables, or everything. On moving day the crew also brings boxes, shrink wrap and packaging materials, and mattress shrink wrapping is included free when you book. Our packing service in Sydney guide explains more.

What cannot go on the truck

We do not carry gas bottles, flammable liquids, batteries, jerry cans or anything holding fuel. Use up or give away what you can before the day, drain the mower well ahead, and ask any removalist what they will not take.

The drive to Canberra

With about three hours of driving between the two homes, you will usually travel separately from the truck. Agree a meeting time at the Canberra address with your crew, leave margin for a stop and for Sydney traffic, and check road conditions before you set off.

Keep a bag in the car with anything you cannot be without that night: medication, documents, chargers, the keys for the new place, a change of clothes, and food and bedding for pets.

Unloading in Canberra

Be at the Canberra end before the truck, with keys in hand and access sorted. If the new place is an apartment, book the lift and loading area with the building in advance. With cartons labelled by room, the crew can place each one where it belongs while you direct the furniture.

If you want the unpacking done for you, our unpacking service wipes down cupboard shelves before unpacking, sets up bathrooms with toiletries and towels, then flattens the boxes and arranges their collection.

When your Sydney and Canberra dates do not line up

If you have to be out of your Sydney home before the Canberra one is ready, ask about storage as part of the same booking. Ours is modular: we deliver a module to your address, our crew packs it, it is held in a secure facility with constant surveillance and restricted access, then it is delivered back and unpacked at the other end. Modules start at 10 cubic metres, and larger loads are handled in the warehouse.

What to do after you arrive in Canberra

This is the part a move across Sydney never asks of you. The ACT Government’s guide for people who are new to Canberra sets out the main tasks, and a few of them come with time limits.

Swap your NSW licence for an ACT licence

If you hold a full interstate licence and intend to drive in the ACT, you need to get an ACT driver licence within three months of moving, according to Access Canberra’s page for drivers with interstate licences. You will need to visit an Access Canberra Service Centre with proof of identity, proof that you live in the ACT, and your current interstate licence.

Register your car in the ACT

If you bring a NSW registered car and it will now be garaged in the ACT, it needs ACT registration. Access Canberra’s page on vehicles registered interstate says you will need one or more vehicle inspections first, along with establishment fees and possibly motor vehicle duty. Its vehicle registration and transfer page says registering is done in person at a Service Centre.

Do not leave it sitting on the list. Access Canberra is clear that “if your vehicle is unregistered, it is also uninsured.” We could not find a single deadline for this on its current pages, so ask when you book your licence appointment.

Update Access Canberra, Medicare and the electoral roll

If you have moved to Canberra from interstate, the ACT Government says you have three months to update your details with Access Canberra. Its checklist then suggests updating your Medicare details through myGov once you have your ACT licence.

For voting, the Australian Electoral Commission’s update my details page says you are eligible to enrol at your new address once you have lived there for at least one month, and that when you move house you must update your enrolment details. The update can be done online.

Mail, schools, pets and getting around

  • Mail. Australia Post’s mail redirection service sends your letters and parcels on to your new address for up to one, three, six or twelve months, and you must prove your identity to apply.
  • Schools. The ACT Government says every child from kindergarten to year 12 is guaranteed a place at their local public school.
  • Pets. Dogs and cats must be registered in the ACT if they are over eight weeks old and have been in the ACT for 28 days or more.
  • Getting around. Canberra’s buses and light rail use MyWay+, and you can pay with a bank card, a phone or a MyWay+ card.

How to choose a removalist for a move to Canberra

The checks are the same as for any move, with extra weight on insurance and the truck arrangement, since your belongings spend a few hours on the road.

Get a written quote and check AFRA yourself

The NSW Government’s advice on choosing a removalist is direct: “Always ask for a written quote before hiring a removalist company.” It also suggests reading the contract for the service details, a household inventory, pick up and delivery addresses and times, payment terms, and any storage costs if the move is delayed.

The same page notes that you can check whether a removalist is accredited on the AFRA website. Rather than trusting a logo, search AFRA’s Find an AFRA Removalist directory by suburb or postcode. We are AFRA accredited and fully insured, and we are happy to be checked the same way.

Ask who will pack and handle your things, not just who will drive the truck.

Ask how your belongings are insured

The NSW Government page recommends arranging insurance for your move, and notes that most removalists only insure their vehicles. Ask every company what cover applies to your belongings on the road. Our insurance options are restricted cover, for events such as fire, flood, collision and vehicle overturning, and full cover, which adds loss or damage during packing, loading and unloading plus accidental damage. Cover can be on a market value or a replacement basis, and additional insurance is not compulsory.

Questions worth asking on the phone

  • Is the quote for a sole use truck carrying my household alone?
  • What size truck are you allowing, and will everything fit in one trip?
  • How is travel time to Canberra, and back, treated in the quote?
  • How will you handle antiques, artwork or anything fragile?

We handle antiques and fine art as a named service, so mention any pieces like these on the first call. For more on comparing quotes, read our guides to choosing Sydney movers and interstate removalists from Sydney, or see our Sydney to Canberra removalists page for the route itself.

Moving to Canberra checklist: a timeline

Work through these steps in order and relocating to Canberra turns into a series of smaller jobs.

  1. As soon as you have a date, ask for written quotes, check each company on AFRA’s directory, and confirm what each price includes.
  2. Book your removalist and decide how much packing, unpacking or storage you need, so it is all part of one booking.
  3. A few weeks out, sort and declutter, order cartons, and start packing the rooms you use least, labelling every box by room.
  4. Book lifts, loading areas or parking at both addresses, and check any building rules on moving hours.
  5. Set up mail redirection with Australia Post, and update your address with your bank, insurer and other accounts.
  6. Use up or give away gas bottles, fuel and flammable liquids, since none of them can travel on the truck.
  7. The night before, pack your priority box and a car bag with medication, documents, chargers and the keys you will need.
  8. On moving day, walk through the Sydney home with the crew, then travel down and be at the Canberra address before the truck.
  9. In your first weeks, update your details with Access Canberra, book a Service Centre visit for your licence and car registration, update Medicare, register any dog or cat, and update your electoral enrolment once you have lived there for a month.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth moving to Canberra from Sydney?

It depends on your work, housing and family, so nobody else can answer it for you. Spend time in the suburbs you are considering, think about how often you will travel back to Sydney, and check the practical steps, such as the ACT licence and car registration, before you commit. Our Canberra service area page lists the suburbs we cover.

How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Canberra?

It depends on how much you are moving, access at both addresses, how much packing you need, whether the truck is sole use, and travel time to Canberra and back. We can quote a fixed price once we know your inventory, access and dates, over the phone on 1300 883 117 or through a free moving quote.

How long does it take to drive from Sydney to Canberra?

The Australian National University’s guide to travelling to Canberra puts it at about three hours, give or take, on the Hume. On moving day, allow extra time for traffic leaving Sydney and a stop, and aim to arrive before the truck.

How long do I have to get an ACT driver licence after moving to Canberra?

If you hold a full interstate licence and intend to drive in the ACT, Access Canberra says you need an ACT driver licence within three months of moving. You will need to visit an Access Canberra Service Centre with proof of identity, proof you live in the ACT and your current licence. Details are on its drivers with interstate licences page.

Do I need to register my NSW car in the ACT?

Yes, if the car will now be garaged in the ACT. Access Canberra says you will need one or more vehicle inspections and a visit to a Service Centre in person, and that in the ACT an unregistered vehicle is also uninsured. Check its page on vehicles registered interstate for current requirements.

Can I store my belongings if my Canberra home is not ready?

Yes. We can add modular storage to the booking: a module is delivered to your Sydney address, packed by our crew, held in a secure facility with constant surveillance and restricted access, then delivered back and unpacked at the other end when you are ready. Ask about storage when you request your quote.
