Last Minute Removalists in Sydney: What to Know Before You Book

A tenant ending a periodic tenancy in New South Wales has to give at least 21 days’ notice, and the minimum drops to 14 days for a tenant leaving at the end of a fixed term agreement, according to the NSW Government’s guide to minimum notice periods for ending a residential tenancy. Add a job that starts sooner than expected or a settlement date that moves, and plenty of people end up searching for last minute removalists in Sydney with far less time than they would like.
This guide is the honest version. Nobody can tell you in a blog post whether a removalist, including us, will have a truck free on your date.
What we can explain is why short notice moves happen, how to improve your odds, what to have ready for a fast quote, and how to avoid being short changed when you are rushing. We have worked as Sydney removalists for more than 20 years, and these are the checks we would give a friend.
Why do Sydney moves happen on short notice?
Most short notice moves are not poor planning. They start with a deadline. On the NSW Government’s figures, a tenant ending a periodic tenancy must give at least 21 days’ notice, and a tenant leaving at the end of a fixed term must give at least 14. If a new place comes up and you give the minimum, that is two or three weeks to find, book and pack.
What tenancy notice periods mean for your move
If you are ending the lease, the 21 and 14 day figures are minimums, so part of the timeline is in your hands. If your landlord is ending it, the notice depends on the reason and the type of agreement, with periods on the NSW page ranging from 14 to 90 days. Check the minimum notice periods for ending a residential tenancy for your exact situation.
Jobs, settlements and plans that change without warning
Leases are not the only trigger. A new job can come with a start date that is weeks away rather than months. A property sale can settle sooner than you planned, or a purchase can line up so the old and new keys change hands on the same day. Relationships end, family needs change, and occasionally a mover you booked weeks ago cancels close to the date.
None of these are unusual or your fault. What matters is what you do in the first hour after you know the date.

If you have to be out before the new place is ready, ask about storage as part of the booking. Ours is modular: we deliver a module to your address, our crew packs it, we hold it in a secure facility with constant surveillance and restricted access, then we deliver it back and unpack it when you are ready.
How much notice do last minute removalists in Sydney need?
There is no fixed answer, and a removalist who gives you one without checking the diary is guessing. It depends on how many crews and trucks are already booked on your date. The rule that holds is simple: the sooner you ask, the more options you have. If you have been given 14 or 21 days, call in the first few days of that window, not the last few.
Why a weekday move gives you better odds
Weekends and peak dates tend to fill first. Our own local removalists page puts it plainly: weekdays typically offer better availability than weekends and peak dates, and can be more cost effective as well. If your lease or settlement leaves any room at all, asking for a weekday instead of a Saturday is one of the simplest ways to widen your choices.
Ask about start times as well. For Sydney moves we offer mid day start windows of 11:00 to 14:00 or 12:00 to 15:00 at a reduced rate. Being flexible on the time, not just the day, gives any removalist more ways to fit you in.
Same day removalists in Sydney: what is realistic
Searching for same day removalists in Sydney usually means a plan has already fallen through. A same day booking depends entirely on whether a crew and a suitably sized truck happen to be free, and nobody can answer that honestly without hearing about your move. Be cautious of any operator who guarantees it before asking about your inventory and access.
If that is you, call as early in the day as you can with the details below ready. We are open Monday to Thursday from 7:00 to 17:30 and Friday from 7:00 to 17:00, and closed on weekends. Outside those hours, our online quote calculator runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What does a removalist need from you to quote fast?
A removalist can only give you a reliable number quickly once they know what is moving, and what the access looks like at each end. We can quote a fixed price once your inventory, access and move details are known, over the phone on 1300 883 117 or after a quick on site or virtual survey. The NSW Government’s advice on choosing a removalist is blunt: “Always ask for a written quote before hiring a removalist company.”
Have this ready before you call
Have these answers ready and the call gets much shorter.
- Your inventory, room by room, with the large pieces listed separately: fridge, washing machine, wardrobes, sofas, and anything in the garage or shed.
- Access at both addresses: stairs, whether there is a lift, where a truck can park, and how far it is from the truck to the door.
- Building rules. In a unit block, check with the building manager or strata about moving hours or a lift booking.
- Your dates and flexibility: the day you must be out, the day you can get in, and any other days or start times you could accept.
- Specialty items. Pianos, pool tables, antiques and fine art can all change what the job involves, so mention them on the first call.
- How much is packed. If the answer is not much, ask about packing help or cartons now, not on the morning.
- Anything that cannot go on the truck. We do not carry gas bottles, flammable liquids, batteries, jerry cans or anything holding fuel, so ask any removalist what they will not take.

Hourly rate or fixed price when time is short
Local moves with us are charged at an hourly rate, and that rate covers the removalists, a fully equipped truck suited to the move, dollies, trolleys, blankets, straps and ropes, plastic mattress wrapping and insurance. If the move takes longer than estimated, it continues at the agreed hourly rate rather than a penalty rate.
A fixed price suits a rushed move because the number is settled before the day. Extra cost can apply for large staircases, heavy or specialty items and access problems such as a long carry or no parking, and we raise those before moving day rather than on it. Our guide to removalist costs in Sydney covers what changes the price of a move.
Short on time to pack? Our packing and unpacking team can take one room, just the breakables, or the whole house. The crew also brings moving boxes, shrink wrap and packaging materials on the day, and mattress shrink wrapping is included free when you book.
How do you avoid a dodgy removalist when you are rushing?
Urgency is when people skip the checks, and the two that matter most take minutes. The NSW Government’s choosing a removalist guidance says to always get a written quote and notes that “You can check whether a removalist is accredited on the AFRA website.” AFRA, the Australian Furniture Removers Association, describes itself as the peak industry body, with more than 250 members operating across Australia.
Check the AFRA claim against AFRA’s own directory
An AFRA logo on a website or a truck is a claim, not proof. AFRA’s free Find an AFRA Removalist search lets you enter a suburb or postcode and see current members by location and service type. Spend thirty seconds there before you pay anything. If a business says it is a member and does not appear, ask why, since it may trade under a different name.
Membership means something specific. According to AFRA’s page on why you should choose an AFRA member, applicant members “are rigorously screened, must meet high standards and are regularly audited to ensure compliance.” All members carry public liability insurance, most can sell additional goods in transit insurance, and AFRA offers a no cost dispute resolution process if something goes wrong. None of that is guaranteed with an operator you found ten minutes ago and cannot trace.
Get it in writing, even when you are in a hurry
A number over the phone is not a quote. Ask for it in writing and read the booking terms before you agree. The NSW Government page suggests reading the contract for the move details, inventory, dates, and payment and storage terms, which are exactly the details that go unchecked in a rush.

Warning signs worth walking away from
We looked for an official government list of removalist red flags and could not find one, so treat the list below as practical advice rather than a regulator’s checklist. Each point follows from what the NSW Government and AFRA do say: get it in writing, check accreditation independently, and know who you are dealing with.
- A firm price for a whole home before any questions about inventory or access
- Refusal to put the quote or booking terms in writing
- Pressure to decide on the spot, such as a price that expires in minutes
- Demands for full payment, or cash only, well before moving day
- An AFRA claim that does not match AFRA’s own directory
- Vague answers about insurance, or none at all
- No business address or depot you can find and check
- A price that changes once your belongings are on the truck
Any one of these on its own may have an innocent explanation. Two or three together, on a day you are already stressed, is a good reason to make one more phone call. Our full guide to choosing Sydney movers goes further on accreditation, insurance and comparing quotes.
What are your rights if a rushed booking goes wrong?
Your consumer rights do not shrink because you booked in a hurry. The ACCC’s guidance on consumer rights and guarantees says service providers “must carry out all services using an acceptable level of care and skill,” and that services must be supplied within a reasonable time if there is no agreed time frame. Nothing in those guarantees depends on how far ahead you booked.
Raise it with the business first
If a guarantee is not met, the ACCC lists remedies that can include repair, replacement, a refund, cancellation, or compensation for damages or loss. The first step is to contact the business directly. Keep your written quote, booking confirmation and photos of any damage, because a paper trail makes any dispute easier to resolve.
Where to go if that does not work
If the business is an AFRA member, AFRA’s no cost dispute resolution process is available to you. If not, or if the dispute stays open, the NSW Government’s choosing a removalist page explains how to lodge a complaint with NSW Fair Trading. That is one more reason to check AFRA’s directory before you book.
How to find out quickly whether we can help
The fastest way to find out whether we can help is to put your move details into our online quote calculator, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or to call 1300 883 117 during office hours. We have worked as Sydney removalists for more than 20 years, we are AFRA accredited and fully insured, and our depot is at Unit H/61 Roberts Rd, Greenacre NSW 2190.
This post does not promise a same day truck, and neither should anyone who has not heard about your move yet, because availability depends on what is already booked for that date. The sooner you get in touch, the more options you will have. Put us through the same checks as anyone else, including AFRA’s directory and a quote in writing.

Interstate and office moves on a deadline
If the move is interstate, our interstate removals run on a weekly schedule with a sole use truck option, so ask early which departure suits your date, and see our guide to interstate removalists from Sydney. For businesses, office relocations can run after hours, overnight or on a Sunday, and our office relocation in Sydney guide covers the planning.
Finding short notice removalists near you in Sydney
Location affects two things on a short notice move: travel time and access. Within Sydney, our call out covers travel time based on distance from the Greenacre depot, and coverage runs across Sydney and out to the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Newcastle and Wollongong.
In Randwick and Bondi, unit blocks and tight street parking are common, so tell us about lifts and where a truck can stop. In Marrickville, terraces and narrow streets raise the same parking question. Around Chatswood, high rise buildings often have loading dock and lift rules, and in Manly, busy weekend streets are one more reason to ask for a weekday. Every suburb we cover is on our removalists Sydney page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book last minute removalists in Sydney?
It can be possible, but it depends on what is already booked for your date, so nobody can promise it before hearing about your move. The sooner you call, the more options you will have, and a weekday typically offers better availability than a weekend. Our free moving quote is a quick way to start.
Are there same day removalists in Sydney?
A same day move depends entirely on whether a crew and a suitable truck happen to be free that day, so be wary of anyone who guarantees one before asking about your inventory and access. Call as early in the day as you can, with your details ready, and ask for the quote in writing.
How much notice do I have to give to end a lease in NSW?
As a tenant, at least 21 days for a periodic tenancy and at least 14 days if you are leaving at the end of a fixed term agreement, according to the NSW Government’s minimum notice periods for ending a residential tenancy. Notice from a landlord depends on the reason, so check the page for your situation.
What do removalists need to give me a quick quote?
Your inventory room by room, access details at both ends such as stairs, lifts and parking, your dates, and any specialty items like a piano or pool table. With those, we can quote a fixed price over the phone on 1300 883 117 or after a quick on site or virtual survey.
How do I check a removalist is legitimate when I am in a hurry?
Search for the business on AFRA’s free Find an AFRA Removalist directory rather than trusting a logo, and always ask for a written quote, as the NSW Government recommends. Be cautious of cash only demands, pressure to book on the spot, or a firm price given without any questions about your move.
What can I do if a rushed move goes wrong?
Raise it with the removalist first. Under the consumer guarantees explained in the ACCC’s guidance on consumer rights and guarantees, remedies can include repair, replacement, a refund, cancellation or compensation. If the business is an AFRA member, AFRA offers no cost dispute resolution, and you can also lodge a complaint with NSW Fair Trading.
