Parking, driveways and strata: local moving realities

Council land and larger trucks

Northern Beaches Council’s Stand Plant Application form applies when any vehicle over 4.5 tonnes or 7.5 metres long stands on Council land, including roadways, footpaths and the grass verge, and it lists loading and unloading among its examples. Council says processing takes a minimum of 2 working days, and placement may only start once its approval letter arrives. If your street is tight, signposted or on a main road, check with Council early and tell us about it when you book. We raise access problems such as no parking or a long carry before moving day, not on it.

On the road itself, the NSW Road Rules allow a heavy or long vehicle to stop in a built up area for longer than one hour while the driver is engaged in dropping off or picking up goods. Signs, clearways and driveways still have to be respected, which is why a short look at the kerb outside both addresses matters.

Strata buildings and lifts

With a third of Beaches homes being apartments, plenty of moves involve a strata building. The NSW Government explains that strata by-laws are rules all residents must follow, and many schemes adopt the model set. The model by-law on moving furniture says an owner or occupier must not move furniture or large objects through common property without first giving the strata committee enough notice to have someone present. In practice, contact your building manager a week or two ahead, ask whether the lift needs booking or padding, and confirm where the truck can stand.

Steep blocks and narrow streets

Parts of the Beaches sit on steep, winding streets, and some homes are reached by long driveways or stairs from the road. None of that stops a move, but it changes the time it takes. Mention steps, slopes and the distance from the kerb to your front door when you ask for a quote.
