If a full service is too much for you then hiring a company to help with the actual moving of items will save yourself pain, time and energy come moving day. If you decide to pack and move yourself with no professional help, consider getting help from family and friends. Remember to have all the packing supplies you need, start packing early and clearly label the boxes and where they will go in the new house, this will ensure a smoother and quicker moving day.

Create a first night box

Create a box with everything you need for your first night in the new house. This will include items like change of clothes, toiletries, toilet paper, bed linen and any other essential items you may need such as tea and coffee. Ensure this box is clearly labelled and placed away from other boxes. When you move into your new house it will likely by chaotic and after a long day all you’ll want to do is head to bed. This box will contain everything you need to settle in for your first night.

Connect utilities at the new house

Internet, energy and water will need to be connected for when you move into your new house. Book your Internet connection in advance as companies can book up quickly. Energy and water can be done up to 4 days before moving. Simply phone up your energy company and arrange to have your electricity and gas connected for the day you move in. If you’re renting some agents will connect the water for you but it may be best to at least ring your local water company and confirm your details and move in date. Ensuring the utilities are connected when you move is important to ensure the previous tenant isn’t paying for your usage and vice versa.  Ensure all utilities are cancelled for your previous address and you pay your final bills.

Let your friends, family and any businesses know about your new address

Ensure your family and friends know where you’re moving so they can come and visit you in your new house! Even more important is to ensure any companies know your new address, which will ensure your mail goes to your new address and not your old. Some companies to notify include subscriptions, banks, insurance, electoral roll and superannuation.

Clean the new house

Generally houses will be professional cleaned before you move in but it doesn’t hurt to run over the house again with a vacuum. Additionally some houses may be left empty for a period of time allowing it to gather dust. Pay particular attention to the bathroom and kitchen plus door handles and other areas you think needs extra attention. To make your job easier think about paying for professional cleaners who will quickly and effectively clean your new house plus steam clean any carpets.  Doing this before you move any furniture in will ensure the whole house is clean and ready.
