What interstate removalists do on a sole use move
Moving interstate is a different job from a local move. The truck is on the road for a long stretch, you usually travel separately, and the two addresses have their own access and parking. Good interstate movers plan the whole chain: the inventory, the truck, the packing, the loading, the drive, storage if the dates do not meet, and the unloading at the far end.
Sole use means the truck is booked for your move alone. Nothing belonging to anyone else is loaded alongside your furniture. We size the truck to the job first, so the move is finished in a single trip rather than repeat runs.
How a sole use interstate move works, step by step
This is the sequence a good interstate moving company should walk you through before you pay anything.
- Tell us what is moving. Use our online moving quote calculator, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or call 1300 883 117. List the rooms, the large pieces, anything fragile or heavy, and the access at both addresses.
- Get a fixed price. Once we know the inventory, the access and the move details, we quote a fixed price, either over the phone or after a quick on site or virtual survey.
- We match the truck to the inventory. Our fleet runs from a 4 to 5 tonne truck for an apartment up to a 65 to 70 cubic metre truck for a six bedroom home, so the load goes in one trip.
- Confirm dates and extras. Packing, storage and insurance are added now, and anything that could add cost, such as a long carry or no parking, is raised before moving day rather than on it.
- Packing, if you have booked it. Our packing team packs one room, the breakables only or the whole house, and labels every box by room.
- Loading day. The crew brings moving boxes, shrink wrap and packaging materials, and your mattresses are shrink wrapped free as part of the booking.
- The drive, or storage in between. The truck heads interstate carrying your goods only, or your belongings go into our secure storage until the new home is ready.
- Delivery and unloading. The crew places each box in its matching room and rehangs clothes from the port a robes. If you booked unpacking, the team also flattens the empty boxes and arranges their collection.

Moving out of Sydney

Moving to Sydney from interstate

Why the Brisbane and Melbourne runs stay busy
In the year to 31 March 2026, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 106,698 people leaving New South Wales for another state or territory and 85,880 arriving, a net interstate loss of 20,818 for the state, according to its National, state and territory population release. Queensland recorded the largest net gain over the same year, 14,718 people, and Western Australia gained 10,314.

What affects an interstate removalists quote
We do not publish a price list for interstate moves, because two moves on the same route can need very different trucks and time. Every quote is built from these factors.
Volume and truck size
The amount you are moving sets the truck, and the truck shapes the quote. Our fleet runs in seven sizes: 4 to 5 tonne, 6 to 7 tonne, 8 to 9 tonne, 10 to 12 tonne, 50 cubic metres, 55 to 60 cubic metres and 65 to 70 cubic metres. The 4 to 5 tonne truck holds 20 to 25 cubic metres and suits an inner city apartment, while the 65 to 70 cubic metre truck suits a six bedroom home or a large office and comes with two professional removalists.
Access at both ends
Large staircases, a long carry or no parking near the entrance all add time, and an interstate job has two sets of access to plan. Tell us about lifts, loading docks and parking at both addresses. We raise any cost these add before moving day, not on it.
Heavy and specialty items
Pianos, pool tables and other heavy or specialty items can add cost on a fixed price job. Upright pianos are moved by our standard removals team rather than a specialist subcontractor (see our piano removals page), and antiques and fine art are a service line of their own. Mention them when you ask for a quote.
Packing and storage
A whole house packed by our team takes more hours than the kitchen and the breakables, so the packing scope you choose shows up in the price. So does storage, if your goods need to wait between homes.
Distance, travel time and the return journey
On regional and longer moves, travel time can apply to the return journey as well as the outward one, because a sole use truck and crew still have to get home.
Your dates
Weekdays typically offer better availability and can be more cost effective than weekends and peak dates. If your dates can move by a day or two, say so when you ask for a quote.

Packing for an interstate move
A long drive is hard on a poorly packed box, so packing is where interstate furniture removalists earn their keep. Our packing and unpacking service is run by a dedicated packing team and can be scoped to one room, the breakables only or the whole house.
- Glassware, dinner settings and valuables are wrapped in packing paper and bubble wrap.
- Hanging clothes go into port a robes and are rehung in the wardrobe at the other end.
- Every box is labelled by room, and the removalists place it in the matching room at the new address.
- Our unpacking and packaging service finishes the job by setting up bathrooms with toiletries and towels, then flattening the boxes and arranging their collection.
If you would rather pack yourself, the moving box shop stocks the cartons we use: the 104 litre tea chest for general household items, a deliberately small 40 litre crystal box so crockery stays easy to carry, and picture cartons for mirrors and glass table tops. Pack one brightly coloured priority box with the things you need first.
Storage when your dates do not line up
Settlement and lease dates often fail to meet, and on an interstate move a friend’s spare room is rarely an option. Our modular storage is built for that gap:
- The storage box is delivered to your address, packed by our crew, taken to our secure facility, then delivered and unpacked at the other end.
- Modular storage starts at 10 cubic metres, and larger loads go in the warehouse.
- The facility has constant surveillance and restricted access, and modular storage is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Storage covers all of New South Wales, from Sydney out to the far west of the state.
Whoever you book, check your contract for “whether there are any extra costs for storage in the event of delays”, as the NSW Government advises.
Insurance cover for interstate removals
The NSW Government’s advice on choosing a removalist is blunt: removalists are not required by law to provide insurance for your property during a move, most only insure their own vehicle, and it recommends you arrange cover for your move.

- Restricted cover protects against fire, explosion, lightning, flood, collision and the vehicle overturning.
- Full cover adds loss or damage during packing, loading and unloading, plus accidental damage.
- Storage cover applies separately while your goods are at the facility.
Cover can be taken on a market value basis, which accounts for age, condition and wear, or a replacement basis up to the value you declare. Additional insurance is not compulsory, and if you only want some items covered, you list them on a declaration form.
How to choose interstate removalists you can trust
These checks come from the NSW Government and AFRA, the industry body, and they apply to any company you consider, including us.
- Get it in writing. Always ask for a written quote, make sure it is itemised, and ask about anything that is not clear before you accept it.
- Check AFRA accreditation yourself. Search the AFRA find a removalist directory by suburb or postcode. AFRA says its members are rigorously screened and regularly audited, and all members hold public liability insurance.
- Ask the insurance question. Find out what the removalist’s own policy covers, and what cover you can add for your goods in transit and in storage.
- Read the contract. It should spell out the service, a household inventory, the pick up and delivery addresses and dates, how payment is made, and any storage costs if there is a delay.
- Compare a few quotes. Shop around, and compare like with like: a sole use truck against a sole use truck.

Two to four weeks out
